Author, poet, and musician, Shirlette Ammons’ first collection
of poetry entitled Stumphole Aunthology of Bakwoods Blood has been
heralded as a celebration of her people and her upbringing.
Published by Chapel Hill, NC’s Big Drum Press, Stumphole features
an introduction by poet, essayist, and professor Dr. Haki R. Madhubuti
who is also founder of Third World Press, the oldest operating Black
press in the world. Dr. Madhubuti says, Ammons has what “Toni
Morrison calls the dancing mind” and “uses the language
of her people like a good musician taking her turn in a big band
to solo.”
"Truly part of the oral tradition. Her voice is strong
and clear. She cares about her subjects. And so do we."
-Nikki Giovanni
"A tongue that dances with glass teaching us to suck hard,
and reach back as far as we can go, for there is something sweet
way back there, stuck in yo' teeth. If we ain't afraid of
brown sugar that oozes out of a southern well of rememberance, reverence,
concoction, and magic then all praises to Sumphole: Aunthology
of Bakwoods Blood...the lost toothpick we've been looking for."
-Jaki Shelton Green
"One of the most gifted of the many young writers I have had
the pleasure of reading. Her poetry and prose shine with originiality,
relevance, and the deep, melodious consciousness of a very old soul."
-Rebecca Walker
